“Gomorrah,” from the City Limits series, draws on historical photographs of Hamburg during the devastating air raids of 1943. Rather than depicting the scene directly, the painting filters these images through layers of abstraction, allowing fragments of streets and structures to surface like traces of a collective memory.
Across this muted ground, translucent fields of colour — blue, yellow, red, black, pink — drift and intersect. Their presence introduces a coded tension: echoes of systems of classification and control that shaped the era, now appearing as shifting, destabilised forms.
The work holds together destruction and interpretation, past and present. Meaning doesn’t settle in a single place; it moves between the faint architectural remnants and the chromatic overlays, suggesting how histories of trauma persist in layered, unsettled ways.

An acrylic abstract painting featuring a background of muted, washed-out tones with faint, indistinct shapes resembling ruined buildings. Bold horizontal stripes in red and blue overlay the background, intersected by vertical pink lines. Drips of paint run down, adding texture and a sense of decay. Large, black circular shapes punctuate the composition.
