Bio & CV

London and Valencia based artist J. Kesín has been painting intermittently since his early twenties. He also trained formally at a later stage, studying painting for three years under renowned lecturer and artist Sibylle Werkmeister. Since 2021 he has been fully concentrating on his art.

Kesín was born in Hamburg, Germany where he lived until 1999. During the 1990’s he also spent extended periods of time in Russia and Uzbekistan, following the break-up of the Soviet Union, which added to his experiences and inspirations.

His artistic interests and influences include the ideas of simultaneity, cubism, constructivism, as well as symbolism and Howard Hodgkin’s associative abstraction.

Working mainly with oil and acrylics, he creates paintings of his perception of different subjects. These range from the autobiographical to literature, general concepts, politics and current affairs.

The subjects of his paintings are often deconstructed into ‘components’, which may relate to various aspects such as different points in time, protagonists, emotions or the physical world, and are then represented on the canvas by layers, interplaying and creating a game of shapes, lines, opacity and transparency. Analysis, emotion and spontaneity are combined in a process of constant conversation with the evolving painting.
