Group Exhibition — The Surface Collective
Bloom Gallery
What Remains was the second exhibition by The Surface Collective, bringing together Greg Bryce, J. Kesín, and Michael Schmeja at Bloom Gallery, Valencia.
The exhibition was conceived as a tightly structured project based on shared constraints. All works were created using the same format (A3 Arches paper), the same limited palette of five colours, and the same materials and framing. By removing variables of colour, scale, and medium, the project focused attention on individual processes, mark-making, and compositional decision-making.
Across 28 works, the exhibition revealed how three distinct abstract practices — shaped by different backgrounds and artistic trajectories — diverge and converge when working under identical conditions. The similarities between the works served to emphasise their differences, highlighting the role of gesture, rhythm, layering, and intuition within each practice.
